Saul Steinberg

Saul Steinberg (1914–1999) was a Romanian-born American cartoonist and illustrator, celebrated for his work in The New Yorker, for which he created over 1,200 pieces, including iconic covers and illustrations. Educated in architecture at Milan’s Regio Politecnico, Steinberg began his career in satirical drawing for Italian newspapers. Fleeing Mussolini’s racial laws, he emigrated to the Dominican Republic before securing a U.S. visa in 1942.
Steinberg became a U.S. citizen while contributing to wartime publications and serving in the Navy, where his off-duty military life sketches gained recognition. Postwar, he mingled with artists like Marcel Duchamp and Mark Rothko and exhibited with major galleries such as Betty Parsons and Sidney Janis.
In the 1950s, Steinberg collaborated with Galerie Maeght, producing limited edition prints that reflected his wit and architectural precision. His career spanned over six decades, encompassing illustrations, murals, stage sets, and more, solidifying his legacy as a creative visionary.
